Blown Double Glazing Replacement In Tamworth

Published: Tuesday 18th May, 2021

Back in September of this year, we got a call from a couple in Tamworth inquiring about the cost of having condensation removed from their double glazing unit.
The Thomsons had been unhappy with their back windows after moving in back in 2018, while loving the huge view from the dining room windows into the garden, the home never felt complete without getting the mist removed from inside the glass unit.

Replacing A Blown Window Unit

Talking to them on the phone we learned that Mr & Mrs Thomson were concerned in general with the quality that double glazing windows offers, and were open to considering the range of other options including triple glazing – as long as they can replace their blown windows and enjoy clear views of the garden from a warm home.
However they were also concerned about the price of new windows, and like most of our customers, they had to consider the value of paying for new windows and having them stand the test of time – afterall a fresh set of energy efficient windows is an investment!
Their goal was to keep costs low, and after hearing about a poor experience from another Tamworth window company that a friend had dealt with – they wanted to ensure that they are choosing a quality service from a trusted installer.
We reassured them that there was no need to worry or go over budget with Windows SOS, so we replaced the glass in the blown unit with A-Rated energy Efficient Glass after diagnosing the reason for it. We always try to find the cause for the glazing unit failing to prevent another blown unit later down the line.

Why Does Double Glazing Become Blown?

There are a few reasons their window unit may have become blown, but we can’t be totally sure, Mr. and Mrs. Thomson weren’t provided with an official FENSA certificate, but the common causes are generally if the windows are South facing, which means that there is more chance of the low sun causing contraction of the glass in the colder months, creating a small gap for mist to build inside the unit.
On top of that there is the chance of poor installation from the previous fitter, which can be quite common, especially if they were only replaced a few years before becoming blown.
Then finally, we have common wear and tear over time and lack maintenance. This could include a lack of ventilation in the rooms that are commonly steamed up with warm air, such as the kitchen, bathroom or utility room.
We came to the conclusion that their double glazing unit became blown because of poor installation and lack of maintenance. After replacing their blown glazing unit with a new set of A-Rated Energy Efficient glass panes, a new seal within a UPVC frame, they were very pleased with the result!
We also recommended that they get a trickle vent installed to reduce the amount of warm air touching the cold glass surface, and remembering to clean the seal to reduce the amount of residue building up risking mould growing.
